Wat Pho Kham, That Phanom,Nakhon Phanom, Thailand, Buddhism

20130111_094824The Temple is located in Nam Kham village south of Thai Phanom and the Kham River. This is yet another of the isaan Mural temples from the Paper by Pairote Samosorn “E-sarn Mural Paintings” 1989. The paper sponsored by the Toyota Foundation is available as a bilingual book. Once again much like Wat Phra Si Mahapho in Mukdahan there is a “disconnect between what he describes and what is on the walls. At times I wonder if he actually visited some of the sites or were students sent to complete the survey? We have, once again, a wonderful example of an early 20th century ubosot. Unfortunatly, you need to see this one and many of the others soon as they are not being maintained to any standard and are deteriorating at a quick pace.

ThatPhanom Riverview Hotel, That Phanom, Nakhon Phanom, Thailand

breakfastArriving in That Phanom on Thursday the 17th of September the first thing I did was get some aerial views of the That, as the weather had let up and predictions were not promising. I then headed over tho the Krit Sada Guest House only to find all sorts of construction work going on so I settled for the Krit Sada 2, which is okay, but not all that great. As Daeng was arriving Friday I drcided to check out the ThatPhanom Riverview Hotel. And what a mistake that was. The only redeeming factor about the place is the staff. They do there best to be helpful and  were always polite.

Magha Puja, That Phanom and Big Money in Nakhon Phanom, Thailand

buddha-bahtI have visited the That Phanom Festival over the last 20 years nearly 10 times. The festival which lasts the week leading up to the auspicious event is a social event that brings 100s of 1000s of people to this small town on the bank of the Mekhong River in Northeast Thailand, Over the years the Tesaban, city administration, has jammed more and more concerts, food stalls and fun fair rides into a fixed area with more and more stalls selling the usual bric a brac and Thai Buddhist stuff. The past few years I have heard more and more complaints about the cost a rent for the festival. Higher rents have meant higher prices which have meant fewer buyers.
The simple fact is that finally the Business part of Thai Buddhism has overcome the Vinaya, Bhikkhu Code of Conduct and monks openly handle money…
