Foodporn, Vietnamese Food, Pho, its Not As Simple as That

imageWhile in Pho 97 the other day i got a taste for Pho Dac Biet and later decided to take a look around the internet to see what folks has to say about the different types of Pho. There is a plentiful selection to choose from. Lo and behold it seems a lot of folks think pho is just pho!…

Pho, Pho Kien Giang, 8730 49th Street, North, Pinellas Park, Florida

pho kienI want comfortable when I go to a restaurant. And I want authentic food when I am comfortable. And I don’t go to a restaurant for “home Cookin”. If I wanted home cooking I would do it at home for less money and better. The broth for pho, if done properly, takes hours letting the bone marrow give up its goodness and richness to the broth. I want real Nouc Mam, not watered down. I want things called what they are called in the country of origin, not cutesy western names. My 3 favorite Pho houses are in this neighborhood. I will be back…again, and again

Reviewing Vietnamese Restaurants, Pho, and Anthony Bourdain.

phoI have been reading reviews by Pho aficionados in Google, Yelp,Foursquare, Swarm and elsewhere since I have been back in the States, 100s if not 1000s of reviews and not one I rremember has mentioned the richness of the broth, about bone marrow about how the beef is not precooked but only by the broth.
People find it easy to eexercise their mouths, or pens, or fingers without engaging their brains. Why don’t you see many Thais in Thai restaurants in America? Because the restaurants do not sell Thai food!. Thais, Laos and other Asians flock to Pho Shops…..

Ben Thanh, Vietnamese Food,Pinellas Park, Florida

ben thanhThis a a Pho House serving traditional Vietnamese food and one of the few locations of any type that gets accurate reviews at Google Maps Reviews. Sunday lunchtime the place was filling up with Vietnamese families, 3 or 4 generations at a table.
Even the cafe sua da came in the traditional setup. Once again there was just one me so the usual first step, as usual was to check out the Pho, and mighty fine it was.
Next time in I plan on trying the Banh Xeo….

Jade Bistro, Asian Cuisine, Saint Petersburg, Florida

Jade Bistro specializes in Vietnamese food, but has Thai, Chinese and more. The carryout menu pictured is an exact copy of the eat in menu.
The first thing that struck me was the fact that the sauces were not in their normal containers. This technique is often used to make you feel a bit upscale, while in fact the products are inferior, which proved to be the case here. The sri Racha sauce was mostly ketchup and the Nouc Mam had an odd taste.
While the Pho was okay it was not as good as Pho Quyen

A Bowl of Pho. A Banh Mi, Just Good Old Vietnamese Food, Pho Quyen,Pinellas Park, Florida

The Vietnamese do it best. For one thing they build restaurants that serve Vietnamese food to the Vietnamese and the locals follow. While a Vietnamese restaurant that serves Vietnemese food is easy to find many places throughout Florida and the larger cities on the East coast. When I want a good bowl of Pho a good bowl of Quaiytiao just wont do, not that I have been able to find a good bowl of Quaiytiao in Florida, though I did in the D.C. area. I have a few more places and many many entrees  to try I will keep sharing…. (more…)

that does not serve pho. I do enowy a bowl of quaytiaw, but the are not the same thing. The owner kindly eplaned to me that quaiytiaq is Thai Noodle Soup and Pho Vietnamese Noodle soup and since they are both soup that they are the same. I asked him how he prepared the broth and it is simply water he boiled that morning while pho is simmered for hours getting rich from the bones and marrow that make pho pho. Sadly on YouTube now one can see wuaytiaw being called pho but the real pho can be found on videosLike This. Thailand is well known IMHO for creating menus that have nothing to with what you find on your plate and in your bowl. In more than 18 years I have found that more than 90% of the Vietnamese restaurants in Northeast Thailand do not serve Vietnamese food. A proper bowl of Pho is one thing I am looking forward to back in the states.
