Chaiyaphum Province, Culture, Nature and Buddhism

There is plenty to do in Chaiyaphum from caving to rock climbing. Take a look at the map and click on many of the icons to see descriptions of the caves and elsewhere.  Cultural ehibits and migrating birds.Three National Parks and plenty of interesting temples, Chaiyaphum is another jewel in the crown that is Northeast Thailand, Isaan.

If you want to waste your time to read the blog post that I find so misleading and incorrect  Chaiyaphum in my Tardis is the culprit

And there are more places to see than those listed below

Chaiyaphum Lodging and the Siam River Resort in Chaiyaphum Town, Thailand

First nights lodging was at Chulabhorn Reservoir at EGATs digs As at most reservoirs I found it a bit over priced, but no one is building nearby. When they started building resorts near the Ubol Rattana Reservoir it made a huge improvement to the lodging situation. The restaurant was the big plus. Service was good prices fair and the staff polite. It was even open before the official opening time. While there was wifi at the restaurant, even 3G was impossible at the lodging. The second night in Phakdee Chumphon, in just outside the district town Basic but 3G signal available and a good dinner a short walk down the road A restaurant owned by a lovely couple she from the area, he “Not Isaan People” from Korat. The night of the 14th we spent in Chaiyaphum town at the Siam River Resort for a princely 990 Baht. This included wifi and breakfast First of all the room had a real shortage of electric outlets The wifi was not the userid/pswd type, but once attached you went to a webpage where you inserted the info…

Stonehenge,Mo Hin Khao,มอหินขาว,Kaset Sombun,Chaiyaphum, Thailand

stonehengeI first visited Thailand’s Stonehenge,Mo Hin Khao a bit over thre years ago as you can see in The Blogspot Blog Isaan Life. Actually in spite of the dirt road and difficult access the site was in better form At the time there were markers explaining the shapes. Also the parking lot now adjacent to the stones now takes away from the ambiance of the place. Before it gave the feeling of remoteness, now especially with work going on it almost feels as if the stones have just been noved to the location. As usual in Thailand movement and construction do not indicate progress. The visitor center seems to act more as a bedsit than an information center and the Police station sits empty as well. Looks like some people once again got their pockets lined in Thailand. Whatever the case the site is certainly worth a visit and perhaps by the time you arrive…

Tham Kaeo, Glass Cave,ถ้ำแก้ว,Phakdi Chumphon, Chaiyaphum

kaeoLeaving the Chulabhorn Reservoir Larry and I headed generally south and a bit west toward Phakdi Chumphon District wher we spent a quite night in the District town Early morning we headed back North about 30 KM to the Wat and Cave that are well signposted The webites I have found all seem to copy paste Tham Kaeo : The cave is similar to a hall, located deep inside the mountain and chilly and humid throughout the year. From the entrance, there is a path leading to a lower level where a Buddha image is enshrined.
In spite of the signage we, with little confusion, found the cave entrance just past the sala. Me being just short of 66 years and Larry, new dad, at 62 are rather careful when investigating areas. Equiped with a decent, but not powerful torch we inspected what we could safely find…

Preserving the Culture of Isaan,Northeast Thailand

satriTourism Authority of Thailand shows little interest in showing visitors to the region the culture and cultural artifacts of the region They a long with other travel websites list  non existant and incorrectly defined sites such as the Arts, Culture and Tourism Promotion Centre in Kalasin still listed by Tourism Authority of Thailand and Sawadee and others after having been closed for more than to years. Most provinces demonstrate little commitment or interest in conserving Cultural Exhibits. While from time to time we can see ribbon cutting photo ops little is done to fund and maintain these sites once opened. Getting ready for the Chiyaphum trip Larry found A Thai Museums Database, from which I transferred locations to the Map When in Chaiyaphum town we visited The Chaiyaphum Cultural Hall at Satri Chaiyaphum school.

Once again thanks to the folks at  http://www.thailandcaves.shepton.org.uk/ who did all the grunt work for us to find the cave at Wat Tham Wiman Na Din and provided the following

HISTORY: The first known visit by cavers was in April 2009 by a SMCC/CSS team.
POSITION: The wat is signed to the south of the road to the Chulaphon Dam, 2km west of Ban Nong Ya Kong. The wat is to the east of the side road, about 250m from the junction. From the wat a path leads around the south side of the hill for about 100m to the entrance.
DESCRIPTION: There are several interconnected chambers, three of which (Main Chamber, Main Layer and Upper Layer) have provided faunal remains…
