weddingwomenOn April 23d 2016 my old friend Vilay’s son Chris was married and a Baci held at the Community Center in Reston Virginia. I remeber Chris, now 28, a a wee lad back in 1991 The community came together to prepare the food and to welcome the brides Ukrainian family and friends into the Lao Community. I have written about Baci a number of times and the best place to get correct information is at the Lao Heritage Foundation Website. It was touching to see not only how the younger generation Laos still respect and enjoy the traditions, but how much the Ukrainian folks enjoyed participating

Baci, A Lao Tradition in Northeast Thailand

baciThe Baci is performed regularly through the towns and villages in Isaan Over the years I have taken part in hundreds of these. The ceremony is in NO way Buddhist. The Maw Pawn is usually a village elder and occasionally an ex monk. I most enjoy watching the old ladies assembling the Pa Kwan before the ceremony. Over the years I have seen the Ceremony turned into a money making event, used by certain monasteries and organizations, that is not the correct implementation of the baci. The Lao Heritage Foundation offers the best I have seen and I will reproduce it here and you can go to their site for more information.

10.00 hrs.-Join the Ceremony of Phi Ta Khon Festival and Phi Ta Khon Parade In front of Dansai District Office area
13.00 hrs.-Enjoy the performances on the stage in front of Dansai District Office
15.00 hrs.-See Ba-Si (Summoning of spirits) Phra Wet at Chao Pho Kuan’s House
16.00 hrs.- Visit Phi Ta Khon Museum and see the Phi Ta Khon mask discarding ceremony at Wang wern Pier, Phon Chai Temple
18.00 hrs.-Visit the “Dansai Lifestyle”, see the tasty local foods fair and shopping OTOP products at Dansai District Office area
20.00 hrs.-Back to the resort

when the racket first started I thought it was practice for the birthday celebration of HRH The Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, born 28 July 1952. They have been anouncing over the PA system that there will be a big ceremony tomorrow the day before his birthday at the temple
