kpwAs the Rains Retreat, or the Pansaa aproaches the Tourism Authority of Thailand advertises the big Candle Festival in Ubon Ratchatani, and you you have not experienced it, it is well worth the visit. And the many sites around the city make it well worth staying on for a few days. But there are plenty of festivities and evnts around the region focusing on both celebration and Buddhism. At Buddhist Monasteries Aslha Puja is the Full moon day and ordinations take place. Pakhao to Samana and Samana to full Bhikkhu ordinations take place…

Asalha Puja, the First Sermon by the Buddha

Asalha Puja commemorates the first Sermon by the Buddha after having as I prefer to say “sussed it out” or as some folks prefer attained enlightenment.From accesstoinsight.org “He now gave up self-mortification and took normal food again in order to restore to his emaciated body strength sufficient for his purpose. Then the five ascetics left him in disgust, judging that he had failed, and was merely reverting to what he had forsaken. But now in solitude, his new balanced effort in the harmony of virtue, unified in concentration, and guided by the ordered consideration of insight with mindfulness, at length brought success in discovery of the way to the goal he had sought for so long. Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival, Khao Pansaa Thailand

The 22d of August is Asalha Puja the day that commenorates the first sermon (Setting Rolling the Wheel of Truth (Dhamma-cakka-ppavattana-sutta) of the Buddha at Sarnath and the Tradition ordination day in real Buddhist temples. Pawhao,wearing white take samana ordination, and samana take full Bhikkhu ordination. The followind day is Khao Pansaa the time the Sangha begins the rains retreat. There is a week long festival in Ubon Ratchatani in Northeast Thailand that atracts thousands of visitor. Over the past few years over and false advertising has reduced the size of the crowds, but this is a festival worth visiting. I reccomend visiting the temples where the candles are made to get an up close look at the work involved. Over the years I have found the work at Wat Burapha some of the most refined

I do not know how many times Thais have lughed at my pronounciation of Thai words and reminding me that the language should be spoken precisely. Well once again they need to take some of their own medicine. . One of Thailand’s Nearly English Language Dailies, the Bangkok Post ran this headline and story for Asalha Puja “Thais flock to temples for Asarnha Bucha”, beats me, never heard of
