Free Thai in Northeast Thailand?

mapLarry over at Khon Kaen Retirement has been digging through the anals of history. Yes anals, not annals. A dark place that seems to be full of shit). I on the other hand am more interested in places I can find, distances, the geography of the area and the like. When I found the map pictured, at Rajabhat University in Sakon Nakhon I finally had what might be of help, in my hand. The locations on the map proved to be incorrect, but possible sites were found, relatively, near by. We have already documented our trip to Camp Alpha in Sawang Daen Din, Sakon Nakhon and the lack of real findings there. The possible airstrip site in Tao Ngio has not been confirmed. In all the only location that seems to be confirmed and might have seen some action during the war is at Na Khu in Kakasin. I had been trying to get back into the exhibit at the Free Thai Cave in Sakon Nakhon for some time with no luck, until the other day…..

The Restaurant of Look Chai Kamnan Boonsong,Kalasin,Thailand

Back in the day Kamnan Boonsong was known for his somtam, gai yaang and beef and today his son is running both branches of  his fathers restaurants. We visited the on on the ring road just west of the big new Tesco in Kalasin. Looking for a place to eat the day before the Lions Club Libray opening we were directed to the establishment and tried out the gai yanng, somtam, khao ngiaow and Beer Leo. For some of you that is BBQ chicken, Thai papaya salad, sticky rice and Beer Leo. Now I realize I am not the expert that many of the travel bloggers are on the subject of Isaan food as I am constantly reading their reviews, but after a few thousand chickens, and a few thousand somtam and certainly thousands of restaurants in Isaan I feel quite shy,but still willing to offer my humble opinion……

As far as somtam is concerned every restaurant has their own recipes  with Bangkok style somtam on the bottom of the list. The Bangkok style is sweet and not very popular in the Northeast. Generally the most popular is Lao style and with a small Mealy Crab cut into it.
The, sorry, myth about burn your ears off somtam is just that a myth. Most Isaan people enjoy somtam that may seem quite hot to people who find oatmeal spicey, but many Mexican food are much spicier as Mexican peppers are hotter the the ones that came to Thailand.
Next the much loved gai yaang or as I prefer to call it yard bird. As with many females in Thailand it is difficult to find much in the way of breasts and the offering at most that Gai Yaang establishments show that. I generally will try the bird at most places that I stop, but with few exceptions plan to be underwhelmed. Gai Mun, a rotisseried full bird for just a bit more is becoming more and more popular in Isaan.
laapboonsongNot wanting to give up on the place where the beer was cold, although no Beer Chang, we went back the next day and I tried the Laap Nuea, beef laap, and that did not let me down. The sticky rice was fresh both times. I would recommend the place, with a small caveat. A number of Thai friends mentioned that the place is quite good and popular, but like so many in Northeast Thailand has a bit of a problem with cleanliness. Prices are okay, food is generally good, so if you are in Kalasin give it a shot.

Blue Highways,Sakon Nakhon,Northeast Thailand,Isaan,and D/809EBC

I have been posting places, people and events of interest in Isaan for more than 12 of my soon to be 18 years now, I have been GPSing correct locations and mapping them for more than 5 now and I have been geotagging photos and making them available in Picasa for some time. Now among the other tools and toys I use on the road I, as you might have already seen am armed with a dashcam. Someone said getting there is half the fun. Obviously they have never visited Thailand where if the potholes don’t get you the assholes on the roads will. One way or another the dashcam will now allow viewers to see what is along the roads in Northeast Thailand from the rual areas to the towns and cities. I will try to post a map along with the trip so you can see where the road is located. bloggers talk about the wonderful Blue Highways of the region….

Opening Ceremony for the of Junior Encyclopedia Library.Kalasin

privyThe dedication was attended by H.E. Air Vice Marshal  Kamthon Sindhavananda a member of the Privy Council to the King in Thailand at the  Technological and Commercial college in Kalasin. The Library was donated by the Lion Club of Kalasin, which also had it’s award Ceremony before the library opening. Isaan dancing was demonstrated  in spite of the intermittent downpours  and the crowd hung tough. This is all part of the  THAI JUNIOR ENCYCLOPEDIA PROJECT By Royal Command of H.M. the King.
It was good to see that the new computer were hooked up to the internet and the students that were volunteered did a fine job of showing the facility at its best. Below is the slideshow of the event both wet and dry and a fine job by everyone.
